The controversy about immigration visas has generated a lot of confusion.
This post is helpful:
The reason H1B Visa debate spun out into a fight goes deeper than the H1B issue.
For many this issue became the vehicle for their resentment about a few big issues but they failed to see how Elon shares their anger:
• How Whites have been discriminated against in corporate America for many years, largely due to DEI. In the year after George Floyd, only 6% of new S&P 100 jobs went to White people despite Whites making up a majority of the race looking to get a job. According to Bloomberg, 94% of the 323,570 new jobs went to "people of color". What occurred over the past 4 years was just blatant racism against Whites and I say this as a Latino.
• The feeling that the immigration rug always gets pulled out from under us. For decades now the establishment has found some way to stop the deportation of illegal immigrants. Even the first time we elected Trump they kneecapped his ability to build a full wall and deport millions of illegals.
Many who have been denied opportunities, job interviews and promotions over DEI are rightfully angry. On top of that they know a fight is coming on illegal immigration where the left and RINO’s will try to keep all of the illegals here. So when H1B popped up, too many attached their anger about these 2 issues in how they approached the H1B debate with an ally.
Keep in mind, Elon invested $44B in giving us a voice online again. He put his neck out for our movement in ways that many don’t even understand. If Trump lost, Elon faced possible jail and the loss of everything he’s ever built as an example for others like him to never cross the left.
Fresh off that risk, instead of a healthy debate he became the punching bag for resentments many have but they took it out on the wrong person. A debate is good and there are serious problems within H1B that need to be fixed. Guess what though? Elon agrees that there are issues that need fixing.
Some key realizations that can get people past this and take us to a productive end:
• Elon agrees that DEI is racism. He agrees that what was done due to racist DEI policies was contemptible and must be corrected. He agrees that we must deport illegal immigrants.
He put his money and career on the line to prove that. That’s worthy of recognition and at least the assumption of good intent.
These very real issues don’t mean we should shoot ourselves in the foot by never trying to poach foreign talent. And to be clear, I’m not saying that is everyone’s position who opposes H1B but I’ve seen some saying that we shouldn’t allow ANYONE and that’s just shortsighted.
When we allow our enemies to steal geniuses, we get weaker as a result.
2 races will decide who the global superpower is for the next 100 years:
1. Who wins the AI race
And
2. Who wins the space race
We would be foolish to not steal every genius we can from our competition. We stand to lose more than you can imagine if we lose those races.
I understand the argument about O-1 vs H1B on this subject but depending on reforms, we need some version of both or a new Visa entirely to ensure that we poach the very best talent while protecting the wages of American workers, prioritizing American workers and further educating our future American workforce.
All that to say, a good deal CAN be had but it’s going to come from working together and giving credit to the sacrifices we’ve all made to get to this point where our guy is the President for the next 4 years. We can’t let perfect become the enemy of good. If we can improve our country 90%, it’s worth it if the other option is hurting it because nothing gets done due to infighting.
Let this be a bump in the road, not a fracture in it that makes it an unusable road.
Everyone calling out the misuse of H1B respectfully has done a great job and I think it will have an impact on the final outcome in terms of how H1B is reformed. This kind of debate is good and what makes X special. Remember how we got here… Together.
Okay now you can yell at me.
