If we have created the illusion of prosperity by borrowing and spending $2 trillion every year, what happens when we stop? What happens when we no longer have the employment or the consumption created by that extra $2 trillion? If the answer is a recession, or worse, we must ask if we no longer have a self-sustaining economy—an economy that cannot exist without massive subsidies. More than inflation or growth, Mr. Trump’s highest priority will be to turn our economy back into a self-sustaining enterprise. That may be a painful process, but there is no higher priority.
