If we stay one step behind, we’re going to lose this race. Last summer, when Ronna McDaniel made GOP presidential candidates sign the “Beat Biden” pledge, I said it was silly because we weren’t going to be running against Biden & he wasn’t really even the President in any real sense. I said it again on the debate stage last November.
The hard truth is that Democrats lured the GOP into spending 18 months of financial & political capital criticizing Joe Biden, which proved not only irrelevant but counterproductive.
Instead, our own strategy gave Democrats the cover to swap in a candidate who avoided saying things in a primary that could damage her in the general election. At the same time, the media won artificial “credibility” in the eyes of independent voters because they publicly excoriated Biden, which makes it harder for Republicans now to allege partisanship when they prop up Kamala.
We were caught flat-footed, and that caused us to say unhelpful things in recent weeks. Calling for Biden to step down as President is senseless & self-defeating. Criticizing Kamala for locking up too many people as a prosecutor makes her sound “tougher” on crime than she actually is. Alleging that Kamala covered up for Biden’s cognitive deficits contradicts the allegation that she staged a coup: independent voters aren’t persuaded by either of those arguments anyway.
Here’s my concern now: our latest strategy of repeatedly labeling Kamala a radical leftist will soon fall flat too. Tomorrow, she’s going to announce a VP who will be undoubtedly presented as a “moderate” which will undermine the claim that she’s a Marxist. There will be “far-left protests” at the DNC, which will only make the ticket look even more moderate in the eyes of independent voters. Kamala is changing her policy positions daily to appear more centrist. The media will cover for her at every step; the fact she said some crazy stuff in the past won’t really matter by comparison to what she’s saying & how the press portrays her now.
The best attack is the one that’s most TRUE: she’s just another pawn in a corrupt system. Biden, Kamala, Buttigieg, Shapiro, it doesn’t matter. We’re not running against individual candidates. We’re running against a *system*. We seek to restore self-governance over managerial oligarchy. We believe the people we elect to run the government should be the ones who *actually* run the government, not their puppet masters. That’s what draining the swamp was all about. It’s not a partisan message, it’s bigger than that: self-governance is what made America great in the first place.
This worked for Trump in 2016. It can work again in 2024 – not just as a message, but as a governing strategy. If we stick to it, we’ll save our country. If we don’t, then may God help us all.
