Elon Musk gave Joe Rogan a five word formula that explains why the most comfortable people in history feel like they are failing.
Musk: “Happiness is reality minus expectations.”
Two variables, and only one of them is expensive. Reality moves in decades, and every gain is paid for in labor and time.
Expectations move in a second. Anyone who wants to change how you feel goes after the cheap variable.
Happiness is measured from a line you never chose. Everything above it registers and everything below it disappears.
Your grandparents had that line set by one street. A neighbor’s car, a cousin’s house, the richest man in a town of four thousand.
Yours gets redrawn a few thousand times before lunch by strangers selected for being exceptional.
None of those lives belong to one person. Your mind takes the best hour from each of them and files the result under normal.
“Comparison is the thief of joy.”
That line has circulated for a century, long before the first feed existed, which tells you the wiring was always there. The machine only learned to run it at full speed.
Comparison raises the line. A second instinct erases whatever falls under it.
Your nervous system turns anything permanent into background. That kept your ancestors alive, because attention spent admiring the roof is attention not spent on what is outside it.
So the roof goes quiet. Heat, clean water, antibiotics, a door that locks, all of it goes quiet within weeks of arriving.
Miracles become furniture.
Every generation is born on top of what the last one built, and the line starts there. Progress accumulates while gratitude resets, so nobody alive feels what any of it cost.

Civilization stays exactly where it was while you are out there. The line falls to the ground and everything that went quiet becomes loud again.

Catching up does nothing. Earn more and the feed finds richer people, get in shape and it finds better bodies.
Hit the milestone you chased for four years and it becomes the entry requirement for the next one inside a month.
A satisfied person closes the app. Someone who feels slightly behind keeps scrolling, so the line has to keep climbing.
Wanting more built the first variable. The trouble starts when a system with no concept of enough decides what enough looks like.
Reality has never been better. The line has never been higher.
You can live inside an outcome your great grandmother would have called paradise and read it as proof you are behind.
The formula does not negotiate. It runs on whatever numbers it is handed.
One of those numbers belongs to whoever holds your attention. Nothing competing for it has ever had a reason to move the line down.
