Planning for AI future - Demis Hassabis

Demis Hassabis' new podcast with Lex Friedman just went viral.

He exposed mind-blowing truths about AI & what's really coming by 2030 that 99% of people wouldn't know.

It took me a day to digest it all...

Here are my top 9 takeaways: 🧵Image
1. The "No Failure" Research Method

@demishassabis said:

"There's no such thing as failure in blue sky research as long as you're picking experiments that meaningfully split the hypothesis space."

Takeaway: Design tests where success AND failure both teach you something valuable.
2. "Survival of the Stablest" Theory

Natural systems survived billions of years of evolutionary pressure, creating learnable patterns.

Takeaway: Study what survives and thrives in your industry. Success leaves algorithmic clues you can reverse-engineer.
3. AGI Timeline: 50% Chance by 2030

The breakthrough moment won't be beating humans at games.

The "Move 37" for AGI: when a machine discovers new physics like Einstein deriving relativity from first principles.
4. Question Selection > Problem Solving

"It's harder to come up with a really good conjecture than it is to solve it."

Takeaway: Focus on asking the right questions, not just finding answers.

The person who identifies the breakthrough question often matters more than who solves it.
5. Practice High-Stakes Decisions in Low-Stakes Environments

"How many times do you get to practice a massive decision moment in your life? Maybe a dozen key decisions."

Takeaway: Use games, simulations, and small bets to practice big decisions.
6. Design for Tomorrow's Technology, Not Today's

"Design not for what technology can do today but in a year's time."

Takeaway: Build for capabilities that will exist in 12 months, not current limitations. Anticipate the research pipeline.
7. Build "No Regret" Systems

"Make no regret improvements - improving one area without reducing performance in others."

Takeaway: When optimizing, ensure gains in one area don't hurt others. Measure holistic performance, not single metrics.
8. The Virtual Cell Project

For 25 years, he's planned to simulate every molecule in a living cell.

AlphaFold was step one. Next: modeling cancer pathways, then simulating primordial soup to discover how life began.
9. Prepare for 10x Speed, 10x Impact Change

"10x the impact of industrial revolution, 10x faster. Instead of 100 years, it takes 10."

Takeaway: Massive change is compressing from decades into years. Build adaptability into everything you do.

It will become a massively important skill.
That's it. Hope you learned something.
