Media manipulation tactics

American Debunk
I took one AP wire story about the Iran war and found 6 manipulation techniques inside it. Not opinions. Named, documented techniques. This is how the news is built. Technique 1: Conclusion Laundering. The headline read "Trump Knocked Back on His Political Heels." That is not a fact. That is a verdict dressed up as a news observation. The manipulation started before you read a single word of the article.

Thread unroll:

I took one AP wire story about the Iran war and found 6 manipulation techniques inside it.

Not opinions. Named, documented techniques.

This is how the news is built.

Technique 1: Conclusion Laundering. The headline read "Trump Knocked Back on His Political Heels."

That is not a fact. That is a verdict dressed up as a news observation. The manipulation started before you read a single word of the article.

Technique 2: Assertion Stacking. The opening paragraph contained 5 editorial conclusions presented as background facts.

None sourced.

None with a named witness. Just stated.

By sentence 3 you had already accepted 5 contested claims as established truth.

“In the two weeks since the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran, US President Donald Trump increasingly has been knocked on his political heels. He’s grown more agitated with news coverage and has failed to find a way to explain why he started the war — or how he will end it — that resonates with a public concerned by American deaths in the conflict, surging oil prices and dropping financial markets.”

Technique 3: Partisan Source as Neutral Observer.

The closing quote (the last word of the entire article) came from the CEO of the National Democratic Training Committee.

An organization that exists to elect Democrats. His partisan role was buried. Most readers won't catch it.

“’They’re flying by the seat of their pants, and the rest of us are paying the price,’ said Kelly Dietrich, CEO of the National Democratic Training Committee.”

Three more techniques in the full breakdown. Vague Sourcing. Single Source Authority. Guilt by Consequence.

Six techniques. One article.

All working together before you processed a single verifiable fact.
