Orwell Oct 2024

In the Orwellian language of the progressive left, a “joyful” campaign is one that is almost entirely dedicated to harsh rhetorical attacks on the opponent. In the closing weeks of the fall elections, Democrats and their media allies are competing to see who can offer the most unhinged denunciation of former President Donald Trump. Democrats are implicitly acknowledging that after a long career in politics as the district attorney of a major city, attorney general of the nation’s most populous state, U.S. senator and now vice president of the United States, Kamala Harris has done little to recommend herself to voters and much to give them pause.

The group that seems to have given up on persuading people that Kamala Harris deserves a promotion includes Kamala Harris. Today she’s campaigning with disgruntled Republican Liz Cheney, and the two will no doubt be formidable competitors in the ongoing contest to express the angriest anti-Trump rants.

But let’s not underrate the condemnatory powers of former President Barack Obama. Recently he showed up in Pennsylvania to insult voters with a fact-free attack on the motivations of people who don’t plan on voting for Vice President Harris. Now he’s back with another fact-challenged smear and his own over-the-top rhetorical assault on Mr. Trump.

Like many Democrats, Mr. Obama likes to ignore the failures of the Biden-Harris era and try to create the impression that Mr. Trump is the incumbent and Kamala Harris is the challenger. Along these lines, in his Chicago convention speech Mr. Obama suggested that our sitting vice president would represent “a new chapter.”
